One of our families is facing an extraordinary medical crisis involving their newborn son, Jack Arneson. While rare conditions and long hospital stays are difficult for any family, this case is especially uncommon — and has made national news and the community now has an opportunity to help.
What Happened
According to reporting by KOIN 6 and KGW8, Little Jack Arneson was born with two rare conditions: Ebstein’s anomaly, a serious heart defect, and Sotos syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting growth and development.
The combination of these conditions is estimated to occur in only one in 250 million births.
Doctors at OHSU indicated they have not encountered this specific combination before.
Little Jack was delivered directly into the pediatric intensive care unit and remains under close medical care at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
More about Little Jack, his family and the battles they are facing
Ebstein’s anomaly is a congenital heart defect that impacts the tricuspid valve, while Sotos syndrome is associated with developmental differences and rapid early growth. Each condition is rare on its own.
Because of the complexity of Jack’s case, medical specialists from across the country are reportedly collaborating on his treatment plan.
Little Jack has already undergone two heart procedures and required intubation, with additional care expected.
The Arneson family lives in Ridgefield and is making daily trips to Portland while balancing life with their other children. Situations like this are often extremely emotionally exhausting and place a huge financial strain on families.
Local support — whether through donations, sharing information, or community awareness — can help reduce these burdens.
What Happens Next
There is currently no confirmed timeline for Jack’s release from the hospital. His care remains ongoing and complex.
This story is still developing, and updates may follow as Jack’s condition evolves.
