Things To Do Near Ridgefield, WA

Your complete insider's guide to everything happening in and around Ridgefield — from world-class entertainment venues to a national wildlife refuge that most visitors never find.

overview of Ridgefield

Most people find Ridgefield by accident — driving north on I-5, they catch a show at ilani or spend a weekend at the Clark County Fairgrounds, and they wonder what the rest of this little city actually looks like. This guide is for those people, and for anyone who has lived here for years and still wants to know what they might be missing.

Ridgefield sits in an unusually interesting geographic position: close enough to Portland to draw destination visitors, far enough away to feel genuinely distinct. We have a national wildlife refuge within city limits, two of Southwest Washington's biggest entertainment venues on our edge, a small downtown worth actually walking, and a lake trail that most of the internet has somehow never indexed. This is what to do here.

Entertainment Venues

Two of the biggest draws in Southwest Washington sit right on Ridgefield's doorstep.

ilani Casino Resort

When the Cowlitz Indian Tribe opened ilani in 2017, it changed what a tribal casino could look like. This is a full-scale resort — hotel, sportsbook, fourteen-plus restaurants, a 30,000-square-foot ballroom — and one of the most polished entertainment destinations in the Pacific Northwest.

The Cowlitz Ballroom books legitimate national touring acts on a near-constant basis. Recent and upcoming headliners have included Switchfoot, Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon, Los Lobos and Los Lonely Boys, Lee Brice, and Nikki Glaser. Tickets are typically cheaper than comparable Portland venues. Beyond the ballroom, Rock and Brews, Line and Lure, and the Lobby Bar all host live music most nights — much of it free to walk in and catch.

You do not need a show ticket to enjoy live music here. Rock and Brews, Line and Lure, and the Lobby Bar host live acts most nights with no cover. Check the calendar before any visit — it is a genuinely fun evening without spending much.

Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds

Five minutes from downtown Ridgefield on Delfel Road, the Clark County Event Center runs one of the most varied year-round event calendars in the region. Trade shows, equestrian competitions, dog shows, home expos, car shows, gun shows, comic cons — if it draws a regional crowd, it has probably been hosted here.

The anchor event is the Clark County Fair in August — a full week of carnival rides, livestock competitions, live entertainment, and genuine fair food that has drawn families from across Southwest Washington for generations. The Dr. Jack Giesy Equestrian Arena hosts horse shows throughout the year with a dedicated following. RV camping hookups are available on-site for multi-day events.

Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge

Over 5,200 acres of marshes, grasslands, and wooded wetlands, sitting right on the edge of town. The Ridgefield NWR is one of the genuinely underrated outdoor destinations in the entire Portland-Vancouver metro, and the fact that most people drive right past it on I-5 is their loss entirely.

The River S Unit Auto Tour is a 4.2-mile one-way loop you drive at 15 mph — your car becomes a wildlife blind, which means the birds and deer do not spook. Great Blue Herons, Sandhill Cranes, Bald Eagles, Canada Geese, Columbian white-tailed deer, coyotes, river otter — it is all here, often close enough to photograph without a telephoto. The Oaks to Wetlands Trail at the Carty Unit is open year-round and passes the Cathlapotle Plankhouse, a full-scale replica of a Chinookan longhouse that is worth a stop on its own.

Entry is $3 per vehicle, waived with an America the Beautiful pass. The annual Birdfest and Bluegrass festival in October is a highlight of the Ridgefield event calendar.

The fact that a national wildlife refuge sits within Ridgefield city limits — and most people driving past on I-5 have never once turned off for it — is genuinely one of the more remarkable things about this town.

Ridgefield Waterfront & Lake River Trail

Downtown Ridgefield's waterfront district sits along Lake River — a quiet channel between the Columbia River and the wildlife refuge. The trail and waterfront area are a short walk from Main Street and are genuinely lovely on a clear day. It is the kind of thing that should be packed on weekends and somehow is not, which is either a well-kept secret or a marketing failure depending on how you look at it.

The Port of Ridgefield has developed the waterfront area with public space and boat launch access. It is a natural before-or-after pairing with a visit to the wildlife refuge, a downtown coffee stop, or an early evening before a show at ilani.
