Who Lives in Ridgefield, Really?

January 27, 2026

Spoiler: There are definitely kids and older adults… but that’s just part of the story.

If you hang out in Ridgefield long enough, people might joke that the town is “all babies and retirees.” That’s only half the picture — and econ nerds (my favorite kind of people) will tell you that median age and population trends help us see the real mix.

So let’s break it down with some solid data.

Ridgefield’s Age Isn’t Ancient… or Baby-Only

The median age in Ridgefield is 34.9 years old according to the latest U.S. Census estimates — meaning half the town is younger than that and half is older. That’s smack in the middle of prime adult life where people are building careers, families, hobbies, and community stuff — not just pushing strollers or playing bingo.

In context, that puts Ridgefield younger than the national average and definitely not a retirement colony.

Ridgefield demographics

A Healthy Mix of Ages

Here’s a snapshot of the age community profile you can paint with data from the most recent ACS estimates:

  • 30% of residents are under age 18 — plenty of kids, for sure. Think playgrounds, schools, soccer games, and hot chocolate runs.

  • About 57% are aged 18–64 — that’s your workforce, your young professionals, your adults living life, starting businesses, going to concerts, learning pickleball, and exploring the local trail systems.

  • 13% are 65+ — retirees are part of the picture, but they’re not the majority.

That means most of Ridgefield is made up of working-age adults, not just toddlers and retirees.

Population Growth + Change

Ridgefield isn’t stagnant. It’s been growing fast in recent years (but we don’t need to tell you that), with the population climbing sharply from about 10,300 in 2020 to around 15,000+ by 2023–2024. That’s nearly a 50% jump in a few years, and more people are still moving in.

That kind of growth isn’t typical of a sleepy retiree town — it’s classic young families + new residents + professionalslooking for community, space, and affordable living relative to big cities nearby.

Households = Variety

The average household size in Ridgefield is close to 3 people, which suggests lots of families, but not only families. Households are big enough to include kids, roommates, partners, and even singles with pets. It’s a mix, not a monolith.

Add to that:

  • Strong homeownership rates (suggesting stability)

  • A big chunk of working adults in the 25-44 age range (people building careers, hobbies, side hustles, and trying new restaurants)

So Ridgefield is youngish, not oldish — with plenty of adults who are neither under-5 nor over-80.

What That Means in Plain English

If you’ve ever felt like your Ridgefield posts are just cute kid photos and retirement workshop flyers, you’re only seeing part of the town. The reality is:

  • Ridgefield has tons of adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s — working, playing, and building life here.

  • There are definitely kids, which makes the place lively (of course).

  • Older adults are part of the mix but not dominating the population.

Picture Ridgefield like this: a growing, balanced small city where people at all life stages live, work, play, and bring energy to community life — not a retirement enclave or only a playground.
