Line & Lure is out. Say hello to sámn at ilani.

After nine and a half years, ilani's original seafood spot has served its last plate. Its replacement, a Cowlitz-owned Pacific Coast kitchen named for the Cowlitz word for fish, opens Thursday, October 1.

Another one of ilani's original anchor restaurants has turned the page. Line & Lure Seafood Kitchen & Tap closed its doors on September 19, and the space reopens tomorrow, Thursday, October 1, as sámn Pacific Coast Kitchen. Yes, lowercase. Yes, there's an accent on the a. Get used to typing it, because I have a feeling we'll be saying it a lot.

Line & Lure was one of the first restaurants to open when ilani debuted in April 2017, back when a seafood boil next to the I-5 La Center exit felt like a novelty. It had a good run. But if this feels familiar, it should: this spring, Michael Jordan's Steak House closed and reopened in June as Sovereign, a steakhouse owned and operated by the Cowlitz Indian Tribe. sámn is the next move in that same direction. The partner brands that helped launch ilani are making way for restaurants the tribe owns and runs itself, rooted in its own culture and foodways.

What's in a name

sámn is the Cowlitz word for fish, which is about as clear a mission statement as a restaurant can have. The menu centers on Pacific Coast seafood and regional ingredients, drawing on the culinary traditions of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe alongside modern Pacific Northwest cooking. The tribe describes it as inspired by the traditional ingredients and foodways of the region's tribal communities.

A restaurant named for the word "fish," owned by the people who have been fishing these rivers for a very long time. Makes sense to me.

What's on the menu

Expect deep-water coastal seafood, gumbos, hearty seafood stews, and fresh Pacific Northwest catches. If someone in your group is firmly anti-fish (we all have one), there are steaks and chicken on the land side of the menu. The bar pours regional Pacific Northwest wines, local craft beer, and specialty cocktails.

And then there's Sunday.

The Sunday Seafood Brunch

An all-you-can-eat seafood brunch buffet runs every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Carving stations with prime rib and steelhead Wellington. Hot and cold seafood, including crab legs and steamed clams. Plus the traditional breakfast lineup for anyone who just wants eggs and a waffle.

$68 adults · $34 kids 10 and under. Pace yourself on the crab legs. Or don't. I'm not your mother.
