The Free 30 Minutes That Gets Your Ridgefield Business Found

August 3, 2026

There's one free thing every Ridgefield business can do in about half an hour that does more for getting found than almost anything else. Most businesses in town have it about 60% done, which is roughly the same as not doing it.

The short version
  • Your Google Business Profile is what people see before they ever reach your website.
  • It's also the main thing AI tools read when someone asks for a local recommendation.
  • A complete profile makes people 2.7× more likely to see you as reputable.
  • It costs nothing, takes about 30 minutes, and most of your competitors haven't finished theirs.

If you've ever searched for a business and seen that box on the right side of the screen — the one with hours, photos, reviews, and a map — that's a Google Business Profile. Yours exists whether or not you've ever touched it. Google generates one automatically for most businesses, using whatever information it can scrape together.

Which means right now, there is a version of your business on the internet that you may have had no hand in writing.

Why it matters more than it used to

It's not just a listing anymore

For years this was a nice-to-have. A tidy listing, a few photos, fine. What changed is what reads it.

45%
of consumers used an AI tool to find a local business in the past year — up from 6% the year before. When someone asks an assistant for a recommendation, your Google Business Profile is one of the main things it reads. BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 · 1,002 US adults

An incomplete profile isn't just less appealing to a person. It's less legible to the software deciding whether to mention you at all.

The actual work

Thirty minutes, in order

Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account. If your business already appears, claim it. Google will verify you own it — usually by phone, sometimes by postcard, occasionally by video. That part can take a few days, so start it now and do the rest when you're verified.

  1. Get your category right This is the single most important field and the one most often wrong. Pick the most specific primary category that fits — "Coffee Shop," not "Restaurant." Then add secondary categories for the other things you do. Your category is a large part of how Google decides which searches you belong in.
  2. Fix your hours, and add the special ones Wrong hours is the fastest way to lose a customer permanently. Set your regular hours, then add holiday hours in advance — Thanksgiving, Christmas, the Fourth. Google prompts you. Say yes.
  3. Add photos, and keep adding them Exterior so people can recognize the building, interior so they know what they're walking into, product or work samples, and a team photo if you're comfortable. Google reports that businesses with photos get significantly more requests for directions and clicks to their site. Add a few every month rather than twenty once.
  4. Write the description like a person 750 characters. Say what you actually do, where you are, and who you're for — in the words a customer would use. "Family-owned hardware store in downtown Ridgefield" beats "your destination for home solutions." Plain language is what gets matched to plain searches.
  5. Fill in the details people filter by Wheelchair accessible, outdoor seating, dog friendly, parking, appointment required, women-owned, accepts cards. These are checkboxes and each one is a filter someone might use. Skipping them means being invisible to anyone who filters.
  6. Add your services or products List them individually rather than as one blob. Each entry is another thing you can be matched against, and it's free space most businesses leave empty.
One thing to check that isn't on the list. Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are written identically on your profile, your website, and anywhere else you're listed. Not "Suite 3" one place and "Ste 3" another. Search engines use that consistency to decide whether all those listings are the same business or several different ones.
After the thirty minutes

The part that keeps working

Reviews. AI recommendations are built largely from review data, and recent reviews carry more weight than old ones. A business with four reviews from 2022 looks dormant. One with a steady trickle looks alive.

You don't need a system. You need to ask. At the counter, at the end of a job, in the follow-up email. Most people are happy to and simply never think of it.

A profile you finished once is a snapshot. A profile you touch monthly is a signal.

Post an update when something changes — new hours, a new product, an event. It takes two minutes and it tells Google the business is active. Answer questions when they appear. Respond to reviews, especially the unhappy ones, in a way you'd be comfortable having a stranger read.

Where to start

If you do nothing else this week: claim the profile, fix the category, correct the hours, and add five photos.

That's twenty minutes and it puts you ahead of most businesses in this town — which is a strange thing to be able to say about something that costs nothing.
