Dragon Boats Are Coming Back to Lake River — and You’re Invited

Fifty-plus teams, twenty-two paddlers a boat, one very good cause. Paddle for Life returns to the Ridgefield waterfront Saturday, August 1 — free to watch, family-friendly, dogs welcome. Clear the calendar.

Here is your official excuse to spend a whole Saturday on the waterfront. On August 1, the Paddle for Life Dragon Boat Festival takes over the Port of Ridgefield Kayak Launch from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and everything about it is built for showing up: free admission, free parking, food trucks, and more than fifty dragon boat teams turning Lake River into a race course. Bring the kids. Bring the dog. Bring a camp chair, because you’re going to want to stay a while.

And underneath all the drums and splashing is the reason this one matters: the festival is a fundraiser for breast cancer survivors across Clark County.

What you’ll actually see out there

If you’ve never watched dragon boat racing, here’s the setup. Each boat carries twenty-two people — ten paddlers per side moving in dead-perfect sync, a steersperson holding the line in back, and a drummer up front pounding out the stroke rate. Now put fifty-plus regional teams in the water, racing 250-meter sprints all day, and you start to get the picture. It is loud, it is fast, and shoreline seats are free.

Get there for the 8 a.m. start if you can. The opening heat is ceremonial — boats crewed entirely by cancer survivors — and it sets the tone for the whole day. People who have been coming for years will tell you it’s the moment that sticks.

Twenty-two people, one drum, 250 meters of open water — and in the first race of the day, every single paddler is a survivor.

Off the water

Between heats, the vendor village along the waterfront keeps everyone fed and busy — food trucks, artisan booths, wellness services, prize drawings, and free cancer screening resources. It’s an easy event to wander with kids in tow. Come for an hour or make a day of it; the racing runs until 5.

Where the money goes

Festival proceeds benefit the Catch-22 Ospreys, Southwest Washington’s only all-survivor dragon boat team, based just down the road in Vancouver. The funds cover local paddling programs, rehabilitation, and education — and this year the stakes are bigger than usual. In late August, the Ospreys travel to France for the international IBCPC Dragon Boat Festival, where more than 4,500 breast cancer survivors from over 35 countries will race together. Ridgefield’s festival is part of what gets them there.

Paddle for Life’s board president, Heidi Steigmann, has seen up close how dragon boating rebuilds strength and community for survivors — it’s the whole reason the organization exists, and why the survivor heat opens the day. The event is made possible by community sponsors including Compass Oncology.
