Put On Your Best Hat — Ridgefield's Favorite Derby Party Is Back
The Neighborhood Refuge is hosting its 2nd Annual Kentucky Derby Watch Party on May 2nd, and if last year was any indication, this one is going to be a very good afternoon.
Churchill Downs is 2,100 miles away and that is fine, because The Neighborhood Refuge is bringing the whole spectacle to downtown Ridgefield. Big hats. Seersucker. Mint juleps. Light gambling on horses you've never heard of. The most fun you can have on a Saturday afternoon without buying a plane ticket.
The race itself — the 152nd Run for the Roses — goes off at Churchill Downs at roughly 6:57 PM Eastern, which works out to just before 4 PM our time. That gives you a solid hour to settle in, grab a mint julep, scope out the competition in the hat contest, and get properly invested before the most exciting two minutes in sports.
What's Happening
Beyond watching the race, there's a full afternoon's worth of reasons to show up early and stay late. The hat contest is the centerpiece — this is not a drill, put some thought into your headwear. There's also a Best Dressed Couple contest for those who want to commit fully to the aesthetic. Think color, feathers maybe, prints perhaps, definitely outfit coordination. There will be Raffle prizes, live music from the Tuesday String Band, and the general good energy of a crowd that's actually excited to be somewhere on a Saturday.
"The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports — and One Great Party."
The Tuesday String Band is a nice touch. Live acoustic music before a big race creates exactly the kind of unhurried, convivial atmosphere that makes these things worth attending. You're not just watching horses run — you're spending an afternoon somewhere that feels like a place.
The Hat Contest Is Real
Worth saying again: the hat contest matters. Derby culture is built on elaborate headwear, and this is genuinely one of the better excuses you'll have all year to wear something ridiculous and have it be completely appropriate. Thrift stores, craft stores, your grandmother's closet — all legitimate sourcing options. Go big.

No ticket info was listed on the flyer, so it's worth following The Neighborhood Refuge on Instagram at @theneighborhoodrefuge or giving them a call to confirm whether this is a ticketed event or walk-in. Given how last year went, arriving early is probably smart regardless.
