There’s a specific grief only East Coast transplants understand.
You move west, everyone is lovely, the mountains are dramatic, the air smells like trees… and then you order “antipasto” and receive three olives emotionally arranged next to a cube of cheddar with some ritz crackers.
That’s when you realize: geography affects cuisine more than politics ever could.
I’m not talking pizza.
Pizza is universal diplomacy.
I’m talking Ravioli that doesn’t come from a freezer bag.
and La Mela’s on Mulberry.
Where dinner lasts two hours because nobody leaves while there’s still sauce on the table.
For me, that place — the moment Ridgefield stopped feeling culinarily far from home — was La Bottega in Vancouver.
And if you know, you know.
So when I heard that Chef Peter Dougherty (if you didn’t know the Dougherty’s sold La Bottega a couple years back) was cooking again — here, in Ridgefield… I got a little bit giddy.
Because chefs like this don’t just cook meals.
They cook memories.
Chef Peter Dougherty at the Neighborhood Refuge
The team at The Neighborhood Refuge is hosting a special Valentine’s dinner featuring Chef Peter on February 13th (the 14th is already booked up) — and this isn’t a themed dinner, it’s a guest chef takeover.
Justin and Renee Serface have turned the historic church into a social-club-meets-gathering-house situation — the kind of place designed for exactly this kind of night. Good spirits, cozy vibe, conversations that drift into strangers becoming acquaintances.
(this is not an exaggeration – YOU WILL make friends that last here)
And tomorrow, a chef people still talk about years later is running the kitchen.
The Menu (Yes, This Is the Real Kind of Italian)
This is a 5-course dinner — not heavy, but layered the way Italian meals are meant to unfold.
Expect things like:
-
baked chèvre with roasted garlic and pomodoro
-
Sicilian-style salad with fresh mozzarella and basil
-
penne alla vodka and baked ravioli
-
chicken milanese and prawn scampi
-
tiramisu and New York cheesecake
Why This Matters (Even If You’re Not a “Food Person”)
Ridgefield is growing fast.
Lots of new chains moving in, which is fine.
But an exceptional chef in an environment with real character and an undeniably “cool” vibe is too good to pass up.
If you were waiting for a reason to go to the Refuge — this is the reason.
